Background

Philosophy was introduced in the University Curriculum in the early 1960s. Initially it was put under the Department of Religious Studies, thus creating the Department of Religious Studies and Philosophy. Though Philosophy was a section in this new arrangement like Religious Studies it retained its own distinct curriculum.

The learning of philosophy is salient in the University Curriculum. Philosophy equips one with a conceptual foundation and capacity to grapple with problems which always arise in our private, professional and public life. It helps develop critical thinking by which an individual and a group of people such as policy makers can intelligibly and rationally proceed to make decisions and choices that affect our practical ends.

Career Prospects The courses offered in the Department of Philosophy may offer one opportunities to teach in tertiary institutions or to serve in the Civil service in areas such as President's Office, Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Labour and Social Welfare, Gender, Culture and Community Development, and with NGOs and other private institutions. Philosophy graduates can also serve with the security forces, particularly police and prisons.

The courses aim at giving students an understanding of the fundamental issues in ethics, politics, law, economics, gender, human rights and culture, helping them identify and analyse the basic reasons that motivate the above dimensions of human life.

The new M.A. programmes in Ethics and Public Management and in Human Rights are intended to give students advanced skills of developing and formulating theories and principles which ought to guide persons in institutional life and to help students to understand the justification of human rights, their history and their present situation in the world, most especially in A
